Brisbane
The city of Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and the third most populated city in Australia. Situated on a bend of the Brisbane River, this city has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and offers plenty to see and do.
Brisbane inherited its name from the Brisbane River however, it was originally referred to as "Mian-Jin", an indigenous name meaning "Place shaped as a spike". The innovative and vibrant city precinct sports a trendy café culture, thriving shopping district and a heritage feel with 19th century sandstone buildings dotted throughout the city.
Located on the Southern Bank of the Brisbane River, directly opposite the city, are the South Bank Parklands. Connected to the city by the Victoria Bridge, the parklands are one of Brisbane's most important cultural precincts and home to several festivals and events. The parklands include mixture of rainforest, grassed areas and plazas as well as the riverfront promenade and the Wheel of Brisbane.
The Wheel of Brisbane is a stand out feature of the city skyline. Taking you 60 metres above the ground in an enclosed air-conditioned capsule, the giant observation wheel offers breathtaking views across the Brisbane River and spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of Brisbane City.
While in Brisbane you must check out the world’s first and largest koala sanctuary - Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Here you can have your photo taken as you cuddle an adorable koala, hand-feed kangaroos and discover a large variety of Australian wildlife in a natural bush setting.
Just north of Brisbane is the Sunshine Coast, home to a magnificent coastline and beautifully lush hinterland. Nearby, you can visit the world famous Australia Zoo, an award-winning zoo that remains a living legacy of the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. The Sunshine Coast is also home to several natural attractions such as the sunny resort town of Mooloolaba, the beautiful unspoilt beaches of Caloundra and the intriguing Glass House Mountains.
Further north off the coast of Hervey Bay is Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island. This World Heritage Listed sand bar is a natural paradise, home to over 100 freshwater lakes and among the cleanest lakes in the world. Here you can visit the gorgeous 75 Mile Beach; a national highway, aircraft landing strip and home of the Maheno Shipwreck.
A short drive south of Brisbane will see you at the sunny Gold Coast, renowned for its golden beaches, theme parks, ‘Surfers Paradise’ and the World Heritage Listed Lamington National Park.
