Larnach Castle
Visit the beautiful Larnach Castle in Dunedin and discover its colourful history. The castle was built in 1877 by William Larnach, taking more than 3 years to build and a further 12 years for the extravagant decorations to be complete. The castle features an astonishing 43 rooms, a 3000 square foot Grand Ballroom and 35 acres of exquisite gardens.
In 1898 after the tragic death of William Larnach the castle went through a series of ownership changes with the castle eventually beginning to fall to ruins. However in 1967, the Barker family purchased the property and spent years restoring the castle to its former glory. The castle was then opened to the public to ensure its survival and to share this magnificent part of New Zealand’s history. Make sure to take in the breath-taking views from the Tower including a 360° view of Dunedin, Otago Peninsula and out to the Pacific Ocean. The property also offers boutique accommodation on the grounds, venue hire and high tea served daily at 3pm in the Ballroom.
