School of the Air
The Alice Springs School of the Air is a correspondence school for primary school aged children living in remote Central Australian communities and properties. The school was established in 1951 and used the radio equipment of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Alice Springs to make radio broadcasts to children throughout the region.
Today the school uses various technology including email and online video via satellite broadband internet to provide daily education services to more than 120 children across one million square kilometres of Central Australia.
You can visit the School of the Air visitors’ centre in Alice Springs and see for yourself the incredible work that the school’s teachers and administrators do to ensure that isolation does not prevent children in the region from receiving a formal education. While you’re there you can purchase educational books to be given out to students in need. Funds raised from the visitors’ centre assist in the purchase of new communication technology and the running of student activities and excursions.
