Royal Flying Doctor Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service is a not-for-profit organisation providing aero-medical care and emergency service to people living in remote areas across Australia.
Reverned John Flynn founded the service in Queensland more than 85 years ago with a vision of providing a ‘mantle of safety’ for the people of the outback. Today the Royal Flying Doctor Service is one of the largest aero-medical services in the world with a fleet of 60 aircrafts and 21 bases across Australia that provide vital care to more than 270,000 patients a year.
The service’s operations base in the Northern Territory is located in Alice Springs where you’ll also find an interactive visitors’ centre which gives visitors an insight into the history of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the much needed medical care it provides to remote Australian communities. Here you’ll see examples of technology from the early days of the service like old fashioned radios and historic medical equipment as well as model aeroplanes depicting the types of aircraft used in the past. There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase a souvenir and by doing so, support the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the incredible work they do.
