Valley of the Winds

Kata Tjuṯa (the Olgas) offers two walks that will take you between the 36 majestic domes, the Valley of the Winds and Walpa Gorge Walk.

Regarded by many as one of the most spectacular walks in the Red Centre, the Valley of the Winds walk is a 7.4 kilometre loop that stops by two spectacular lookout points. Taking around three hours to complete, this walk will take you between the domes and deep into Kata Tjuṯa. The walk is steep in areas and follows a rocky creek bed. As such, a good level of fitness is required however there are several rest stops allowing you to catch your breath and take in the views.

The first stop is at the Karu lookout for views across the many domes of Kata Tjuṯa and out into the sacred site of the Aṉangu men’s area. Although there are some steep inclines, it’s well worth the effort and the view that awaits you is breathtaking. Walking to the first lookout is only a 2.2km return trip Unfortunately, when the weather reaches 36°C or greater the walk is closed from this point on for safety reasons.

Continuing deeper into Kata Tjuṯa will take you to the Karingana lookout. You’ll be taken down into a haven within the domes through trickling creek beds to a hidden amphitheatre. Passing several different types of desert habitats, there’s the opportunity to view many different plants and birdlife.

The second lookout walk is a 5.4km return trip, but we recommend continuing the Valley of the Winds circuit rather than turning back. Be sure to get to this part of the walk early to avoid the crowds and see the local wildlife.
