The Rocks

The Rocks is one of the oldest and most historic parts of Sydney. Its sandstone walls tell a tale of Sydney’s colourful past from the dirty days of convicts, sailors and street gangs to the rise of modern day developments, restaurants and million dollar views.

For more than 40,000 years this area of land set on solid sandstone rock was the traditional home of the Gadigal people. Then in 1788 the British arrived and named it ‘The Rocks’. In the early days of the colony it was a pretty unpleasant place to be but over the years with a mix of new development and the careful preservation of beautiful heritage buildings from the early 19th century, The Rocks has established itself as a must-see destination.

These days you’ll find intimate wine bars, weekend market stalls, historic pubs, boutique book stores, designer brands, theatres and the renowned Museum of Contemporary Art all in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance of Circular Quay.
