Swan River
On the banks of the graceful Swan River is Perth, described by many as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. This calm body of water separates downtown Perth from its southern suburbs and offers great views of the stunning cityscape.
The Swan River was named in 1697 by Dutch explorer, Willem de Vlamingh after the gorgeous black swans that he saw in its waters. Among the oldest rivers in the world, it has been flowing through the same path for millions of years. The local Aboriginal people, the Nyoongar, reference the Swan River in their Dreaming stories. It’s believed that a snakelike being, the Wagyl, travelled over the land creating waterways leading to the creation of the Swan River.
In earlier times, the Swan River was used as the main transport route between Perth and Fremantle but today, locals flock to the river for walks, cycling and picnics or to take a cruise on its calm waters.
